Argentine coach Diego Simeone of Atlético Madrid acknowledged that his team’s opponent and rival, Real Madrid, has a richer history ahead of their upcoming match on Tuesday in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16.

Simeone, 54, stated at the pre-match press conference: "I always position Barcelona and Real Madrid based on their history, so nothing has changed."

He continued, "Both clubs have remarkable histories, and we are growing, which is a wonderful thing." He added that Atlético has a chance to create a memorable story at the Santiago Bernabéu tomorrow.

He remarked, "Given that we always tie situations to history, and Real Madrid’s history in the Champions League is exceptional, tomorrow we have a great opportunity."

"Respect"

Simeone believes that the local rivalry between the two teams won’t influence the continental encounter, saying: "I see it as a match marked by respect against a strong opponent, and I believe they respect us equally."

He further explained, "I don’t think past matches will have any impact; this is the Champions League. As for the city, I think it's a spectacle for Atlético and Real to face off."

On his young Argentine forward, Julián Álvarez, he said: "He is still young and needs to keep going this way, continuing to develop."

He added, "He has areas for improvement, and we hope that the team and coaching staff will help him keep evolving. He is full of energy and enthusiasm, eager to put in more effort, and this will contribute to his growth."
