Carlo Ancelotti, the renowned Italian coach and current manager of Real Madrid, recently shared his thoughts on AC Milan and its historical significance in his career. He emphasized that Milan holds a special place for him, stating that the club is far more than "just an ordinary thing or a memory from the past." In a statement made to the Italian radio station "Rai 2," Ancelotti said, "Letting go of Paolo Maldini, despite any flaws he may have had, means wasting and abandoning a part of the club’s history. Paolo is a football man, and he represents Milan. They made a mistake by sacking him."
Maldini, the legendary defender and former technical director of Milan, was dismissed in the summer of 2023 following a dispute with the club’s new owners, "RedBird." This move came as a shock to many, especially considering Maldini's role in revitalizing the club. His dismissal also marked a difficult period for Milan, who have been struggling under the guidance of coach Sergio Conceição. The club recently faced a disappointing exit from the Champions League at the hands of Feyenoord, and they are currently battling to maintain their position in the league, with hopes of finishing in the top four to secure a spot in next season’s prestigious European competition.
During his time as technical director, Maldini played a key role in Milan’s resurgence. He was instrumental in guiding the club back to the Champions League in 2021, after a seven-year absence, and in securing the Serie A title in the 2021/22 season—an achievement that ended an 11-year wait for the Scudetto. Additionally, under his leadership, Milan reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Champions League, a feat the club had not achieved since 2007.
Ancelotti, who has a deep connection with Milan, having won numerous trophies with the club, including two UEFA Champions League titles, also weighed in on his potential future. Rumors have linked him to Roma, who are currently searching for a permanent coach after parting ways with Ivan Jurić in November 2023. Claudio Ranieri has been appointed as the interim coach until the end of the current season and is expected to transition to an administrative role afterward, playing a part in selecting the club’s next manager.
When asked about a possible move to Roma, Ancelotti expressed his contentment at Real Madrid. "I have great memories with Roma," he said. "I don’t know what will happen in the future, but for now, I’m happy here at Real Madrid. I have a contract, and I can’t be a coach forever." Ancelotti also praised Ranieri for his tactical acumen and leadership, acknowledging his strategic approach and the positive impact he has had at Roma. He concluded, "It’s not surprising the good work he’s doing, and I doubt he’ll stop." Despite speculation about his future, Ancelotti's commitment to Real Madrid remains firm, as he is under contract until the end of the 2025-2026 season.
