Liverpool endured a shocking 3-2 defeat away to Fulham on Sunday evening, in a match held as part of the 31st round of the English Premier League. Despite entering the match as league leaders, the Reds stumbled against a determined Fulham side, who turned the game around after falling behind early in the first half. This unexpected loss could prove costly in Liverpool’s title race ambitions.
The goals for Fulham came through Ryan Sessegnon in the 23rd minute, Alex Iwobi in the 32nd minute, and Rodrigo Muniz in the 37th minute. Liverpool's two goals were scored by Alexis Mac Allister in the 14th minute and Luis Díaz in the 72nd minute. With this result, Liverpool remain at 73 points, and their lead over Arsenal, who sit second, stands at 11 points — but Arsenal now have games in hand. Fulham, on the other hand, improved their position in the standings, moving up to 48 points and claiming 8th place.
The match began with both teams showing caution, resulting in a relatively uneventful opening few minutes. However, Liverpool broke the deadlock in the 14th minute. Alexis Mac Allister received a pass from Ryan Gravenberch in midfield, carried the ball forward, and unleashed a stunning shot from outside the penalty area that found the back of the net. It was a spectacular strike that gave goalkeeper Bernd Leno no chance.
Instead of collapsing after conceding, Fulham responded positively and showed great composure. They managed to level the score just nine minutes later. Andreas Pereira sent in a cross that deflected off Curtis Jones and landed kindly for Ryan Sessegnon, who capitalized on the opportunity with a precise finish to the right of goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
Following the equalizer, Fulham gained confidence and started to push forward more aggressively. In the 31st minute, Pereira once again tried his luck from distance, narrowly missing the target with a powerful shot that hit the side netting. A minute later, Fulham capitalized on a costly error by Liverpool’s Andy Robertson. The left-back misjudged a pass, which allowed the ball to reach Alex Iwobi. Although the ball initially rebounded off a defender, it returned to Iwobi, who made no mistake with his second chance, firing the ball into the back of the net and giving Fulham a 2-1 lead.
Just five minutes later, Fulham struck again. Iwobi delivered a lofted pass into the box where Rodrigo Muniz used his strength and skill to beat Virgil van Dijk. He then calmly slotted the ball past Kelleher to make it 3-1. The first half ended with Liverpool looking shaken and Fulham riding high on confidence.
In the second half, Liverpool introduced Diogo Jota, Luis Díaz, and Harvey Elliott to try and shift the momentum. In the 48th minute, Jota was set up by Mohamed Salah but saw his shot brilliantly saved by Leno. Liverpool kept pushing, and in the 72nd minute, substitute Conor Bradley sent in a perfect cross to Díaz, who finished neatly to reduce the deficit to 3-2.
Liverpool continued to press in search of an equalizer. Curtis Jones had a header saved by Leno in the 74th minute, and Harvey Elliott struck the crossbar with a curling effort in the 79th. In the final moments, Chiesa had a shot saved, and Elliott was denied again by the excellent Leno in stoppage time. Despite their efforts, Liverpool couldn't find the third goal, and Fulham held on for
a famous win.
