Gianni Infantino, the Swiss president of the International Football Federation (FIFA), expressed his full support for Saudi Arabia’s successful bid to host the 2034 World Cup, a decision that has sparked some controversy.
Saudi Arabia was awarded the prestigious hosting rights during the FIFA conference in December, a move that marked a significant step in the global football landscape. While the decision received widespread attention, it also drew criticism, particularly from the Norwegian Football Federation, which expressed concerns over FIFA's choice.
However, Infantino, in remarks made in Belfast, staunchly defended the decision. "There was a decision made by the conference that unites the entire world," he said. Infantino emphasized the importance of bringing all nations together, noting that this decision was part of a broader vision for the global development of football.
He elaborated, saying, "I believe this (decision) was a very positive step for football. It is crucial that we gather everyone around the table. We will be in North America in 2026, followed by South America, then Africa, and Europe will host the World Cup in 2030. After that, we will return to Asia in 2034."
Infantino further explained that the decision was not made hastily. "The FIFA conference fully approved this move after a detailed and thorough report on all these aspects. It was a well-thought-out decision, and it reflects the global nature of football."
In summary, Infantino framed the award of the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia as a landmark decision that not only brings a major football event to a new region but also helps to foster unity across the world of football.
